The following is just an example of the process to study John 1:1-5

Comprehension

Read the following verses several times

John 1:1-5 (NIV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Paraphrase

The Son of God, who is God, was at the beginning of creation and participated in creation of all things. He is the life & light to all and nothing can extinguish that light.
