   It has only been since the advent of the electronic age that family genealogical research has become,in some cases, as easy as Googling a name and copying the information . Previous work into a families genealogy meant years of meticulous reading of old family Bibles, parish marriage, birth and death record, and years of reading court and property records.

   In the Barker family there are four books that were written and published between 1877 and 1927 that are the basis for the many of  existing genealogies that are present on the internet today.

They are:

"Barker Genealogy" by Elizabeth Frye Barker Published by the Frye Publishing Company, New York, New York 1927

   Today we can find most of the information we need on the internet to fill in the many generations of our ancestors. We no longer have to spend hours, days, months and years accumulating minute bits of information hidden away in basement, attics and historical records.

   So we owe a debt of gratitude to those who went before us. We need to note and correct any mistakes that we may find, be diligent in our citing of sources and meticulous in our work for our descendants will use our work as the basis of their own.

Most importantly we should be grateful to those who came before us for their hours of diligent work on our behalf.

Charlemagne King of the Franks

The descendants of Thomas Frederick Barker are also descendants of Charlemagne (also know as Charles I King of the Franks and Charles the Great).

He ruled the areas of France and Norther Europe from 800-814. In his life time he had at least 4 wives and several mistresses and about 20 children.

On the surface this sound like a big, exciting and prestigious person to have as an ancestor. He was a king and a powerful one. He united most of Europe under his command, not a small feat.

Before anyone gets very excited you have to understand that most people of European descendant are related to Charlemagne.

Middle Ages

In history, as well as in genealogy, the Middle Ages, 5th to the 15th centuries, are a murky, wibbly, wobbly, timey, wimey (thanks Dr. Who) period of time. It was about a 1,000 years of fluctuating kingdoms, ideologies, and just general craziness.

I know one thing for sure, the Middle Ages can turn genealogy research into a mind boggling search for verifiable truth. The Barker family has been for years linked to Alfred the Great through Lady Joan Beaufort and her marriage to Sir Robert St. Lawrence. The Beaufort line was tied to the St. Lawrence's but unfortunately it has come to light that Joan Beaufort was probably not Sir Nicholas St. Lawrence's mother. So now the search starts for another connection to Alfred the Great. It is possible there is a connection through the Vermadois  family.

Here is the murky part of recording of the Middle Ages, almost no two references seem to agree. Right now I know absolutely that it all is making my brain hurt.

James Barker who emigrated to the Colonies in 1634 is in Wikipedia.

There are two discrepancies in the article that I am trying to get worked out, 1) His birth date is stated as 1623 and it is probably 1617, 2) Francis Dugan is actually Francis Latham Dugan (sometimes called the mother of governors) click on her name and read her about her very interesting lady.

James Barker (1623–1702)^[1] was a deputy governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He sailed from England with his father, also named James Barker, who died during the voyage. Also on the same ship was future Rhode Island Governor Nicholas Easton. Barker was put under the care of his aunt, Christianna Beecher, who later married Easton, bringing her and Barker with him to Newport.^[1] Barker was active in the civil affairs of the colony during much of his adult life, undertaking positions as commissioner, assistant, and deputy over a period of many years.^[1] In the Royal Charter of 1663, which became the basis for Rhode Island's government for nearly two centuries, Barker was named as one of the ten Assistants (magistrates) of the colony. In 1676, during King Philip's War, it was voted that the advice of the most judicious inhabitants of the colony be obtained, and that these people sit at the next session of the assembly. Barker was one of the 16 men whose counsel was sought in this request.^[1]In 1678 he was elected as Deputy Governor, serving under governors Benedict Arnold, William Coddington, and John Cranston, the first two both dying in office in 1678. He was a Baptist minister, assisting in the ordination of Rev. Richard Dingley in 1690.^[1] His wife was Barbara Dungan, the oldest daughter of Frances Dungan and her husband William.^[1]

So it starts~ I am compiling a list of all the great grandchildren (the children of my cousins) of Thomas Frederick Barker.

My mother was Isabel Grace Barker McMillin. Youngest child of Thomas Frederick and Agnes Gilmore Barker. 

If I am counting correctly I am one of 32 first cousin born between 1933 and 1958. I am looking for the names of my cousin children. (better known as my second cousins or 1st cousins once removed) . Please include birth, marriage and death dates and names of spouses.

Excitement has run amock in the tree house. So much has happened in the tree house. I no longer live in the tree house. I now reside in my own Hobbit home below the tree house. My grandchildren and their parents now live in the tree house.

The grandchildren's cousins are here for a 2 week visit. Five small people all running through life daily between the ages of  seven and two above my head makes life far from mundane.

I was invited today to visit the UK in either 2014 or 2015. Pure bliss is the only way I can describe my mental state right now.

The weather has finally changed & it is wonderful outside.

Velvet Night

Years ago there was a man by the name of Hank Ketcham who had a great talent. Not only could he draw a cartoon strip but he could also think like a 5 year old boy.

One of my favorite cartoon strips of all time go as follows:

Dennis the Menace sit up in his bed in his darkened room wide awake.

He tip toes down the hall to his parents room and they are asleep.

So he tip toes out of their room and down the stairs.

He promptly opens the front door and walks down the sidewalk.

After a short stroll he says, "There is nothing like a night that feels like velvet."

And tonight the night feels like velvet.

Breathe of Fall

Did you feel it?

It was fleeting like the shadow from the corner of your eye. By the time the feeling is recognized it is gone. Leaving only the feeling of loss and the yearning for more.

It is the tinge of autumn that rides the early morning breeze. Welcomed after the blazing of summer heat. It is the promise of tomorrow that leads us forward into more summer's blazing, knowing that soon enough the weather will cool & the days will shorten.

It is a Monday

You know it is Monday when:

1. You sleep for 1 hour and are awake four.

2. If there is something to trip over, you trip over it. (including your own feet)

3. The dogs & cat act like they never learned any manners.

4. All the things you planned on doing are now put off till manana.

Morning!

Yes, it is morning. Ugh!!! Usually I am a morning person but today (well actually last night or maybe the wee hours of the morning) I had to take some meds. I am now paying for it. So much to do today. Right now all I want is to curl up and sleep.

To top everything off it is going to be another day above 90 degrees again today. I have stopped counting but it has been a long, hot summer. I want & need some cool weather.

My Quest

Since I seem to be unable to get anything in my house to become organized, cleaned or otherwise presentable. Also every knit project I start I seem to get it partially done and then decide that the challenge is gone from that project so it holds no interest for me.

I have set myself a quest. My quest is to find all the information that I can find about left handed knitting. Most articles & books seem to stop at "this is how you knit and this is how you purl". No I have been knitting about 20 odd years and don't claim to know much about knitting but everything I have read about left handed knitting answers few of my growing list of question.

So the quest begins. I will let you know how it goes.

Night

Argh! I have accomplished nothing constructive today. It is almost 9PM and my quandary from today will be the the same quandary that I have everyday. I start to feel light headed. I know that I must either stop what I am doing and rest or my world will spin out of control. One way or another I will accomplish nothing. Oh well! At least I have a challenge to face tomorrow. Night to all!

So Mia went to her new home on Saturday. Yeah! I think it is a great fit.

2 nights without the heating pad & muscle pills, Yeah!

It is still hot out but it feels like fall is just around the corner. All the schools are back in session. Yeah!

I need to shampoo my throw rug, restack the wood on the porch, mow the yard one more time, buckle down & get a Christmas present I started done, move a bed upstairs & reorganize my workroom. Then after all the doctor visit next month start compiling Christmas presents so they can get mailed out before Thanksgiving. Ahhhh!

Busy or Buzy

Busy or Buzy, which ever way you say it this summer has been crazy. As summer closes it is time to update.

Mia will hopefully go to her new home this week. 8 homes in 4 years has been her life. I am praying that the 8th will be her forever home. Her new mom is the perfect person. She loves these giants and is making preparations to welcome Mia to her new home.

My son pounded posts and helped me put panels up for the new dog yard. Thanks Josh. While his wonderful and sweet wife bought us all lunch. So the Dynamic Duo have a new place to run and play that is outside.

My back needs winter to come so that I stoop working it so hard. It has been protesting since Saturday

Blog Change

I am changing the scope & perspective of this blog. From this day forth it is becoming someone else's story. I believe that every life force in this universe we call home has a purpose. Now this may a strange statement that seems to be at odds with the fact that I am a born-again Christian. I believe that Jesus Christ is God & my Lord and Savior. It is only through Him that I may enter heaven.

Before some of you start screaming that I am a heretic, (audio, vide, percipio), listen, see & learn.

We each have an essence. Everything living thing has an essence. That essence, the real, permanent, individual & ultimate nature of a thing (from Webster's Dictionary). This is how we tell a tree from grass, a fish from a snake, etc.

We as people each have our own essence. Since we are the ultimate life force created by God, we have certain responsibilities. We are responsible for our own choices. A tree never has choices, as an example.

Since we have choices we have responsibilities for the things we choose to do. Doing nothing in a situation is a choice. We are responsible for our actions and how they impact the rest of the living forces around us.

So enough of my philosophy. This blog is about I choose to impact other life forces. These life forces are named Chewbacca, Loki, Daffy & Mia. This will chronicle their lives.
